8 Back-to-School Tips for Parents Who Have Kids With Eczema by Mei Marcie

School presents a few areas that may trigger eczema for your child. Work with the school, if possible. Here are some suggestions!
- Sweat/Sports – Sweat or sweat residue left on the skin may irritate. Get extra time for showering or send a change of clothes. Have your child use a gentle cleanser and avoid soap.
- Dust – Dust mites are a common allergen for older kids. Ask for alternative cleaning duty to make sure your child's environment at school is as dust-mite free as possible.
- Uniform – Explore alternative material if your child’s uniform is "scratchy" and not cotton.
- Heat – If your child’s assigned seat is too hot or in/near sun, ask for a change.
- Swimming – If chlorine irritates, get a doctor exemption letter.
- Food – Have known food allergies in writing for your child’s school.
- Encourage your child to take responsibility for his or her skincare, too, like moisturizing and not scratching.
- For those with severe allergies, have an EpiPen ready.
Always talk to your child's school nurse with any concerns.
